People everywhere use devices that were invented in Australia. When you prepare a meal in the home, take a flight in an aircraft, work in agriculture, have treatment in hospital, use a phone, drive a car or many other things, you partake of benefits created by Australians. They say give an Australian a piece of string or wire and there is no guessing what he/she will invent. Australian inventions, not only ease daily life in Australia: they are gifts to the whole world.
Air Seeder
The sewing of seed was made easier in 1955 when Albert Fuss of Dalby, Queensland, had the idea of making an automatic seeder.
Bitter-pit Control
Research at CSIRO in the 1920s led to a way of preventing bitter-pit, corky flecks on fruit. Fruit had to be picked at a particular stage of maturity.
Black Disease Vaccine
In 1930 Arthur Turner at CSIRO developed a vaccine for necrotic hepatitis bacterial infection in sheep.
Bollgard II Cotton
CSIRO's Greg Constable and Danny Llewellyn led a team that developed a strain of cotton resistant to the caterpillar helicoverpa in 2003. Two genes from the soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis were inserted into cotton producing a protein toxic to the caterpillar.
Bovilis Vaccine
Shipping fever, pneumonia which can lead to bacterial infection, can kill more than half of the cattle affected. A vaccine to counter the sickness was launched in 2004 by DR Chris Prideaux of CSIRO.
Bovine Pleuropneumonia Vaccine
Arthur Turner at CSIRO in the 1970s discovered a treatment for bovine pleuropneumonia. The vaccine was extremely effective.
Buffalo Fly Trap
Cows walk through a plastic tent where flies are attracted upwards to the light to die in the heated plastic dome, a system invented in 1991 by Robert Sutherst and Robert Tozer of CSIRO.
Coast Disease Treatment
This wasting disease of sheep could be successfully treated with cobalt, a discovery made in the 1930s by CSIRO.
Cloud Seeding
It was made to rain in 1947 using dry ice and silver iodine by CSIRO.
Combine Harvester
This machine which stripped and collected grain was invented by Hugh Victor McKay in 1882 at Drummartin, Victoria.
Cycloprothrin Insecticide
This nontoxic insect killer developed by CSIRO in the 1970s is used in Asia to control pests in rice paddies
Dynamic lifter Fertilizer
Norm Jennings got on with the job of packaging and distributing chicken as fertilizer in 1959. Yes, he patented it.
Gene Silencing Hairpin RNAi
CSIRO found a way of stopping particular genes from working in the 1990s. This has led to new cattle breeds, irradiation of pests and diseases, and the "blue" rose.
Grain Stripper Harvester
A device that separates grain from cereal then places it in bins was invented in 1843 by John Ridley of South Australia.
Landguard Pesticide Residue Treatment
There is danger of contamination from pesticides everywhere in the world. After-use residues and bi-products remain in soils. An enzyme based solution to the
problem was found by CSIRO in 2005. It markedly lowered organophosphate levels.
Linola Stockfeed
Solin, a strain of linseed was developed in 1992 by CSIRO as a low alpha-linolenic (ALA] stockfeed with improved storage properties.
Mechanical Wool Clipper
Frederick Wolseley worked hard to finally put together a working sheep wool clipping machine in 1872 (registered 1887).
Merino Sheep Breeding
Dr Helen Newton Turner of CSIRO developed an analytical technique for breeding Merino sheep in the 1950s.
Myxomatosis Rabbit Control (calicivirus)
Rabbits were almost totally controlled with the release of myxomatosis by CSIRO in 1950.
Permaculture
This new natural agriculture that replaces chemical based methods was formulated in 1972 by Bill Mollison.
Pneumatic Broadacre Air Seeder
Albert Fuss of Dalby, Queensland, made a seeder that blows seeds onto planting tines of any chisel plough in 1956.
Prickly Pear Control
The Argentinian moth Cactoblastis Cactorum was introduced by CSIRO in the 1920s to reduce the prevalence of prickly pear.
Rotary Hoe
Cliff Howard developed a cultivating machine with rotating blades like wheels that was propelled by an engine in 1912 at Gilgandra.
Rust Control
Dr Jeff Ellis of CSIRO identified the two genes that strengthen crops against rust fungi in the 1980s.
Salvinia Control
CSIRO released the Weevil Cyrtobagus Salviniae into Queensland's Lake Moondarra to control the waterweed salvinia in 1980.
SilviScan Wood Analysis
Dr Robert Evans at CSIRO headed a program to evaluate wood properties on plantations in the 2000s.
Siratro Cattle Feed
This tropical legume developed in the 1940s by Jack Griffiths Davies at CSIRO fattened cattle very quickly.
Sirex Wasp Control
In the 1950s Robin Bedding at CSIRO found a way to control the sirex wasp that was destroying pine trees. Nematode unsegmented worms was the answer.
Sirolan FleeceScan
Transportable instruments based on Laserscan are used to measure the quality of wool fiber mainly for its fineness. More than 100 fleeces per hour can be evaluated, a project by CSIRO in 2000.
Sirolan Laserscan
All fabrics such as linen, wool, cashmere, angora and alpaca are valued by their fineness. CSIRO perfected a laser in 2008 to measure a snippet of fiber for fineness.
Sirospun Yarn Spinning
This was a major step forward by CSIRO in 1985 for the Australian wool industry. Simple equipment spun two-strand yarn together in a method that is much stronger in regard to centrifugal forces than older systems. Yarn can be spun at a higher rate.
Solospun Weaving Attachment
This technology launched in 1998 by CSIRO enables single yarn to be woven as weft or warf. An attachment is affixed to a standard worsted spinning frame. Cost is sgnificantly reduced as is the propensity for yarn breakage.
Stump Jump Plow
A plough that could jump over stumps in fields was made by Richard and Clarence Bowyer Smith in 1876.
Twinsplicer Yarn Spinning
Yarn ends are mechnically spliced together with this ground-breaking machinery developed by CSIRO in 1981. It superceded knotting of yarn which caused a lot of down time due to having to unknot fabric.
Pre-paid Postage
World's first public postal system began in 1838 in NSW.
Xerox Copying (Xerography)
Professor O. U. Vonwiller found a way to make quick copies of printed pages in 1907 at the University of Sydney.
Polymer Bank Notes
To prevent counterfeiting this money was developed hy CSIRO & Note Printing Australia Limited (NPA) a hranch of the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) in 1988.
Teleprinter
Donald Murray of Sydney (NZ born) made this machine for recording telegraph messages onto paper tape in 1898.
